Married Husband Franklin, James ( * about 1650 + about 1721 )

Marriage estimated 1679     1b

Many compilers indicate that James married Eunice Barnes, daughter of Samuel Barnes. This appears to be a confusion with the Eunice Barnes who married a James Franklin in 1742.

The most reliable sources give only 4 children of this marriage: John, James, Lydia and Abel. Some compilers add Mary (who was the daughter of their son James) and David/Daniel (this may be based on a question posed in the Boston Transcript in 1923 listing Dan instead of John; there was a Daniel Franklin born about 1690, but he is apparentaly unrelated - see Franklin Cousins web page).

" James Sr. was a resident of Dartmouth before 1682. He took the oath of allegiance there March 26, 1686. By deed dated 16 Jan 1691/2 he bought 4 acres in the town. About 1693/4 he moved to Swansea. On 17 Feb 1706/7 he signed a deed of land in Swansea to his son James Jr.

John Franklin; Vol 105:256 of New England Genealogical and Historical Register suggests that John is a brother to the James who died in Swansea testate on 21 Oct 1756. John of Swansea, cordwainer, sold land with his wife Ruth in 1717. James Franklin was a witness to the deed. [Bristol Deeds, Taunton, Bk 10:527]

Bristol Co. Mass. The will of John Franklin of Swansea, cordwainer, was dated 11 Sep 1738 and proved on 19 Jan 1739. Wife Hannah, received 1/3 of the estate. Daughters, Hopestill, wife of John Jones and Ruth, wife of Richard Round had already received their share. Other children, Record, Lamuel and Ebenezer named. [Bristol Co. Probate Vol. 9:142]

James Franklin; James left a will in Scituate, R.I. dated 8 Aug 1748. Sons, Phillip, James, Gideon, Ichobod, Elisha and Uriah are named. Daughters, Lydia Rowland, Abigail Handy, and Martha Aylsworth are named. A granddaughter Sarah Lee is named. Daughter, Mary is not named. Could she have married a ____Lee?

Lydia Franklin; Birth from Dartmouth Vital Records [FHL#974.485/DIV28v]

Abel Franklin; Birth from Dartmouth Vital Records [FHL#974.485/DIV28v] Abel died at age 68 and is buried in the Old Friends Cemetery in Jamestown [Rhode Island Biographies Vol 3 p.2095"
