The earliest record of Richard Ormsby in New England is when he appears as an arbitrator of a dispute in York in 1641.[2] However, Banks' History of York states that he was one of the seven original "planters" of the York settlement on Agamenticus Creek (York River) near Point Bolleyne.[3] As such, he would have been there before 1636. This area had been assigned to Edward Godfrey in 1641. The inhabitants, including Richard Ormsby, became members of the ill-fated "city of Gorgeana," incorporated by Sir Fernando Gorges 1 March 1641/2. There were no town or church records prior to 1641, so it is not unexpected that he does not appear in records.
