"Ezra Potter gave the name “Arkwright” to the newly formed township. It is generally believed to have been named after Richard Arkwright, an English industrialist.
Ezra Potter came to Arkwright from Vermont by ox-team. He looked over the site at Buffalo and moved on to Dunkirk – then swampy land – coming back to higher ground. He located in the northwestern part of Arkwright and established a home and a sawmill."
