James and his brother Thomas were among the twenty families who came to Massachusetts under the leadership of Rev. Ezekiel Rogers arriving in Salem in Dec. 1638. In Apr. 1639 they joined with forty others and bought out the proprietors of the lands adjacent to Newbury and Ipswich and established the town of Rowley, named after the parish where Rev. Rogers came from in Yorkshire.
