Narrative
Family Tradition
Family tradition has it that John Foss, the ship’s caulker was forcibly brought from England in chains as a prisoner of the British Army for some crime committed back in mother England, to serve as a laborer in the colonies. It was this John Foss that apparently escaped from custody, jumping ship in Portsmouth harbor, swimming ashore, and making a new life for himself, eventually marrying a Mary Berry. The British didn’t consider him important enough to waste time conducting a search to bring him to justice.[1]
