Narrative |
To Choose a Wife
There is an unusual story about the method Nathaniel used to choose his second wife. He let his staff fall to the ground and then traveled in that direction. The staff fell toward the southwest, so Nathaniel went to Woburn and promptly proposed to Mary (Carter) Wyman. She initially expressed some reservations; pointing out he had a lot of children (eight living). He said he had never known a woman to object on that basis, and that he was going to Boston and would call again for her answer when he returned.[1] |
