Narrative

Daniel Malone, Ireland

Daniel and family were from the village of Kiluccan, four miles northeast of Mullingar. The village now is little more than a pub and a few houses. I was fortunate in locating anything at all, because so many of the old records were burned by the English occupiers. The family was listed on the tithe roll of 1654 (at that time tithe payment to the Church of England was required of all Irish, regardless of religious affiliation), parents and three children. There was a Church of England vicar there in the 1920's, an amateur historian who wrote six books on Kiluccan parish. He described local archaeology as well as Cromwell's occupation of the area and the battle in which the castle fell. Daniel's was the only line of the family in Westmeath in the 17th century, the other Malones remaining in County Offaly. There are still Malone descendants around Kiluccan. Daniel would have left during the "Clearances" when the English attempted to clear the rich farmland of the Midlands of all Irish and take the land for themselves. Their plan was to send the Irish west of the Shannon or kill them all--"to hell or Connaught".
