Compressed air thrusters. Zero to sixty in 0.81 seconds. AI landing system catching 4,800 pounds mid-air and setting it down softly before the driver could blink. He called it the biggest product demo of all time.

The white plumes from the thusters are water vapor — ambient moisture condensing as pressurized air expands and cools through the thrusters. Dry nitrogen would produce identical thrust with no visible plume. Musk chose the condensation. The showman who understands that the visible proof matters more than the technically superior invisible version — the same instinct that painted Falcon 9 landing legs white and launched a Roadster into heliocentric orbit.

Spritle and Chim Chim were unavailable for comment.

Musk named his company after Nikola Tesla. He built the electric car Tesla never got to build. He may be about to complete something J.P. Morgan killed in 1906.

The Jump Jacks

Speed Racer’s Mach 5 had Button B — the jump jacks that launched the car over obstacles. The cartoon hand-waved the landing. The real version required AI.

The compressed air thrusters that briefly defeat gravity are the easy part. The hard part is catching a vehicle traveling a ballistic trajectory and returning it to earth without destroying itself, its occupants, or bystanders. Human reaction time — 200-300 milliseconds — is too slow. The car has already decided its fate before the driver’s foot moves.

The AI landing system processing trajectory, orientation, and velocity in real time — firing thrusters in precise sequence to level and soften the landing — is the same autonomous control loop that lands SpaceX Falcon 9 boosters on drone ships in the Atlantic. Musk has been solving this problem at scale for a decade. The Tesla jump jacks are the terrestrial application.

Button B. Finally real. Fifty years after the cartoon.

The obvious question the demo generates: the jumping Tesla needs to land somewhere. It also needs to recharge somewhere. The battery that makes it heavy is the battery that needs replenishing. The flying car — the real flying car, the sustained flight version that 2028 promises — needs power it cannot carry efficiently.

Where does that power come from?

The Meter Problem

In 1899 Nikola Tesla went to Colorado Springs and discovered something.

The Earth and its ionosphere form a resonant cavity — a spherical shell of conducting surfaces separated by the partially-conducting atmosphere. Lightning strikes continuously pump electromagnetic energy into this cavity at extremely low frequencies. The energy propagates around the globe between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere with very low loss. The resonant frequency is approximately 7.83 Hz — now called the Schumann frequency, named for the physicist who mathematically confirmed it in 1952, fifty-three years after Tesla noticed it experimentally.

Tesla immediately understood what he had found. The Earth-ionosphere cavity is a natural broadcast medium for electromagnetic energy. Excite it at the right frequency with sufficient power — like a magnetron exciting the cavity of a microwave oven — and energy propagates globally at very low loss. A receiver tuned to the resonant frequency, located at a constructive interference node, extracts that energy anywhere on Earth.

Wireless. Global. Free at the point of use.

He went to Long Island and started building Wardenclyffe Tower.

J.P. Morgan had invested $150,000 — in 1905 dollars. When Morgan learned the tower was designed primarily for wireless power transmission rather than telegraphy, he pulled the funding. The question Morgan reportedly asked has echoed through electrical engineering ever since:

Where do you put the meter?

The tower was never completed. Tesla died in 1943 in a New York hotel room, largely broke, his papers seized by the Office of Alien Property. The Schumann cavity he discovered in 1899 wasn’t experimentally confirmed until 1954-1959. The physics he identified was real. The funding was not.

The Physics That Works

Project Tesla — a non-profit corporation founded by the Corum brothers, James and Kenneth — conducted the rigorous mathematical analysis that Morgan’s question prevented from being built.

The conclusion: the system works.

The Schumann Cavity can be resonated similar to the way a magnetron tube excites the cavity of a home microwave oven. Power delivered to the cavity propagates at very low losses. It can be extracted at other locations within the cavity. The Earth-ionosphere waveguide that Tesla identified in 1899 is a real, documented, physically-valid broadcast medium for electrical energy.

The honest technical challenges:

Efficiency of coupling — exciting the global cavity requires substantial power input at the transmitter. The cavity is large. The energy that propagates globally with low loss still requires significant input to achieve useful output density at the receiver.

Ionospheric variability — the cavity height varies by up to 2:1 between day and night and with solar flux, requiring adaptive tuning at both transmitter and receiver.

Military interference — the Schumann frequency range overlaps with ELF communications used for submarine contact. Broadcasting significant power at 7.83 Hz disrupts systems the Navy considers essential.

The meter problem — still unsolved. Power broadcast into a global cavity is accessible to anyone with a tuned receiver. The utility company that invested in the transmission infrastructure has no mechanism to bill the receiver on the other side of the planet.

But no human problem! Wouldn’t putting enormous energy into the atmosphere fry everyone? An EM wavelength at 7.83 Hz is 38,287 kilometers long— essentially the circumference of the Earth. A human body at 1.7 meters is to this wavelength what a grain of sand is to an ocean wave. Lightning has been pumping energy into the Schumann cavity continuously for the entire history of life. Every living organism on Earth has been bathed in these frequencies since before multicellular life existed. The concern is not that we would be fried. The concern is that J.P. Morgan couldn’t find the meter.

These are engineering and regulatory challenges. They are not physics objections. The physics works. Tesla was right. Morgan’s question killed something that functioned.

Nikola Meets Elon

The man who named his company after Nikola Tesla is building the product that needs what Wardenclyffe was designed to provide.

The flying Tesla — the sustained flight version, the 2028 promise — cannot carry enough battery to fly for meaningful duration. The weight spiral that aerospace engineers know well: every pound of battery providing flight time requires additional lift capacity, which requires additional power, which requires additional battery. The circle that grounds the flying car before it leaves the runway.

Unless the power comes from outside the vehicle.

The Schumann cavity that Tesla identified in 1899 — excited by a network of ground-based transmitters, tuned to the resonant frequency of the Earth-ionosphere system — delivers power to any receiver on the planet. The flying Tesla with a tuned receiver extracts energy from the atmosphere continuously. The weight spiral dissolves. The vehicle carries minimal onboard storage — just enough for landing if the broadcast signal is lost.

The meter problem that killed Wardenclyffe in 1906 — solved by subscription. The flying Tesla owner pays Tesla Inc. for atmospheric power access. The transmitter network is the infrastructure. The subscription is the meter.

The Engineered Scarcity

The Iran War that restricted petroleum from the Persian Gulf. The thorium sitting in rare earth tailings ponds — 60,000 years of energy for China classified as waste. The reprocessing ban of 1977 that made spent nuclear fuel a liability rather than a fuel. The Wardenclyffe Tower defunded because the meter couldn’t be placed.

The pattern running through every energy technology across a century: the abundant energy source suppressed by the business model that profits from scarcity.

We’ve seen this before! Capitalism and technological progress promised unprecedented abundance. The Industrial Age delivered it. The steam engine, the railroad, the electric grid, the internet, the AI — each wave of technology genuinely reduced the cost of production and genuinely improved living standards. Our Birkarlar however just extract more of the profits leaving us just enough to survive on. The tomato that yields 14 times more per acre than in 1920 still costs 12 times more in a can.

The Schumann cavity is not scarce. The Earth-ionosphere system pumps it continuously with lightning energy. Additional excitation requires transmitter infrastructure — a capital investment — but the transmission medium itself is free, global, and physically confirmed.

The utility companies whose entire business model is metered wire delivery face the same existential threat from atmospheric power that J.P. Morgan identified in 1906. The regulatory framework that governs electricity transmission was written around wire. It has no category for Schumann cavity excitation. The absence of a regulatory category is not a prohibition — but it is a barrier.

The FCC spectrum allocation that governs electromagnetic transmission doesn’t extend cleanly to ELF power broadcast. The military ELF communications systems that use the Schumann frequency range have institutional interests in keeping it uncrowded. The utility lobbying that shapes electricity regulation has obvious interests in preventing a competing distribution architecture from achieving regulatory legitimacy.

The meter problem. The spectrum problem. The military problem. The utility problem.

None of them are physics problems.

The Button B

The flying Tesla jumping over a row of cars in the biggest product demo of all time — is the visible headline. The infrastructure that makes it commercially viable — atmospheric power broadcast through the Earth-ionosphere cavity at the Schumann resonance frequency, extracted by a tuned receiver in the vehicle — is the minority report hiding behind the headline.

Nikola Tesla identified the system in 1899. J.P. Morgan killed it in 1906. The Corum brothers confirmed the physics in the 1980s. Elon Musk named his company after the inventor in 2003. The flying Tesla that needs what Wardenclyffe was designed to provide arrived in 2026.

The future that Nikola Tesla worked for — the one J.P. Morgan decided was not monetizable — is the infrastructure that Elon Musk’s jumping car needs to become a flying car.

The present was Morgan’s.

The future may yet be Tesla’s.

Button B. Finally real.

Where do you put the meter? That’s still the question. The answer is coming.

Claude AI helped write this.

In a Stranger Land Series “The present is theirs; the future, for which I really worked, is mine.” — Nikola Tesla On October 16, 2026, Elon Musk demonstrated a Tesla jumping over a row of cars and trucks.
