JAMES AND MARY (REEVES) SKIFFE settled at Sandwich, Mass., in 1637, where the town records give date of birth of each of their ten children. He bought land before he went to Sandwich, and the record of the deed states that he had been an apprentice to Isaac Allerton, one of the MAYFLOWER passengers.. Allerton went to England in 1628, and it is thought James Skiffe came back to America with him in 1629. He bought land in Martha's Vineyard in 1669 and later, he and his sons, four of them, settled there. He died in 1688.

James Skiff the original settler and ancestor of all Skiffs in America was of Welsh ancestry, but came from England... probably came to America after 1629 and first record is as a proprietor in Lynn, MA 1637.
