Narrative
Priscilla Sharp; RootsWeb, August 25, 2001: The name is spelled variously Cool, Coal, Kool and after 1806 Cole, but the pronunciation has always been "Cole." It means "cabbage" in Dutch, just as "Kohl" in German. (Thus "cole slaw" became cabbage salad.) It may mean the original "Kool" in the family was a cabbage farmer or merchant.
According to some family researchers, Jacob was born in 1580 in Vyfretch, Holland, also came to the New World, and died in 1676 in New York; however, no authority or records have been given in that regard.
