* William Smith, b. 08 Sep 1692, Salem, Mass; d. 09 Aug 1770, Rutland, Mass.Mary Ruck Smith is the half sister of Sarah Burroughs, wife of Rev. George Burroughs who was hanged for witchcraft in Salem in August 1692. The Smith family removed to Newport, R.I. in 1693 or 1694 which at that time was a haven for persons from Mass., and other New England areas, seeking escape from the terror of the witch trials.
