obit : FRANKLIN — James Sampson Toney, 74, of Franklin died at 11:50 a.m. June 23, 2008, at his residence.

The Simpson County native was a carpenter and owner of J&B Produce. He attended Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. He was a son of the late Youless Toney and Vallie Davenport Toney. He was preceded in death by a son, James “Jimmy” Toney; a daughter, Linda Toney Russell; a son-in-law, Danny Brown; a sister, Elizabeth Summers; and a brother, Lyman Toney.

Funeral is at 2 p.m. Thursday at Booker-Gilbert Funeral Home, with burial in Restlawn Memory Gardens in Simpson County. Visitation is in progress today and begins at 6 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Sue Gregory Toney; four daughters, Nancy Keen and her husband, Wendell, of Franklin, and Cathy Gregory and her husband, Chip, Robbie Conyer and her husband, Tommy, and Pam Allen and her husband, Eddie, all of Portland, Tenn.; a son, Timothy “Tim” Toney of Franklin; a sister, Jo Rickles and her husband, Bobby, of Portland; a brother, Edward Toney and his wife, Joann, of Portland; 18 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
