Deceased Name: GEORGE DAVENPORT, 93 SALES EXECUTIVE
George M. Davenport Jr., a pharmaceutical sales executive at Wyeth Co. for more than 40 years, died of congestive heart failure Thursday at Broadmead retirement community in Cockeysville. He was 93.A pharmacist by training, Mr. Davenport, who was born in Cordova, Ala., began his career at Wyeth in the mid-1930s and eventually rose to serve as sales manager for the company's Baltimore division.
After retiring, he opened a Christmas tree farm in Hereford, which he ran for about a decade. He also traveled to England several times with his wife, Elizabeth, who died in 2002. He spent most mornings reading the newspaper from cover to cover, according to family members.
"He absolutely refused to watch television," said his daughter Juliette Forbes of Fallston.
During World War II, Mr. Davenport served in the Army Air Forces at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
Before serving in the Air Forces, he earned a bachelor's degree in 1935 from the University of Alabama and a degree in pharmacy in 1937 from Howard College in Birmingham, Ala.
He and his wife moved to Maryland in 1949 and he lived in Hereford from 1954 until he moved to the Broadmead community two years ago.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 20 at Immanuel Episcopal Church, 1509 Glencoe Road, Glencoe.
In addition to his daughter, survivors include another daughter, Elizabeth Davenport of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Annie M. Guthrie of Guntersville, Ala., and Sarah D. Cale of Birmingham, Ala.; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.
