"8th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry
8th Infantry Regiment was organized at Camp Trousdale, Sumner County, Tennessee, in May, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Smith, Overton, Lincoln, Fentress, Putnam, Jackson, Moore, and Marshall. Ordered to Virginia, the unit arrived at Huntersville in July with 887 men. Assigned to D.S. Donelson's Brigade, it participated in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign, then was sent to Port Royal, South Carolina. During the spring of 1862, it moved west, fought at Corinth, Munfordville, and Perryville, then joined the Army of Tennessee. During the war it was attached to M.J. Wright's and Maney's Brigade. The 8th took an active part in the campaigns of the army from Murfreesboro to Atlanta, returned to Tennessee with Hood, and saw action in North Carolina. It reported 38 casualties at Perryville, lost sixty-five percent of the 474 engaged at Murfreesboro, and took 260 into the fight at Chickamauga."
Joan Rambo's husband is a direct descendant of Joseph Benjamin Davenport.
Gainesboro was spelled Gainesborough in 1832.
Joan Rambo says:"Joseph Davenport b ca 1834 TN, died from wounds at the Battle of Chickamauga and is buried at Myrtle Hill Cemetery, Rome, GA. Married Elizabeth Wheeler, they had 2 sons, Jubilee b 10 Oct 1857 TN and Joseph Benjamin b 11 Oct 1861 TN.
The closest I can find to a "possible" match for Joseph on the 1850 census is the one listed with Samuel Sloan. On that same page is Hannah Devenport (widow of Henry Davenport). She has Marsilvy 14, Henry 11, John 10 in her household. Next door is Andrew 24 with a wife and two children. Next on that page is John Sloan and family, and next is Samuel Sloan and family. I understand Samuel's son Archibald married Nancy Davenport.
Hannah Devenport's (Davenport) maiden name was Cassetty/Cassitty b VA (more has been done on her line.) I notice Samuel's wife Rhoda is also born in VA, maybe there is a connection between Hannah and Rhoda??

7 Aug 2005, Mary Katherine (Kay) Davenport says:" I have a picture of Joseph Davenport on which my father wrote on the back of the picture that Joseph A. Davenport was born in 1832 in Gainesboro, Jackson County, TN. He ran a merchandise store in Gainesboro before the war. My brother is going to be tested in the Davenport DNA project. He has ordered the kit. Hopefully that will tell us the line of Davenports we are related to. I don't suppose it will help with a Sloan connection however."

1850: Listed out of order, not sure if he is Rhoda's son or not.
1860: Farmer, PP worth $200. Wife Elizabeth age 25, dau Julia (Jubilee?) age 5.

Note from Kyle Davenport. DNA Testing proves this Joseph was related to my Henry Davenport.
