History of Springfield Vol II Town Records

Charles Ferre, son of Sir John of England, a descendent of the Duke of Lorraine, 1205, also a descendent of a Protestant Refugee, who fled from Picardy, France in 1566 to escape the persecution by the first members of the French "Church of the Strangers" organized under a patent from Queen Elizabeth in 1573 and continued unbroken until 1830. Among the entries of Baptism is that of a Charles Feret, baptized Apr 23, 1637 in the Walloon Church in the crypt of Canterbury Cathedral, England. Charles Ferre came to America from Normandy, France in 1660 and settled in Agawam (Springfield). He was chosen Selectman on his wedding day and he was granted 30 acres of land at Shipmuch, MA in 1665; 20 acres more on the north side of Agawam in Feb 1666 and 30 more acres in 1667. Charles held the office of Constable in 1671, selected Tithingman at Town Meeting, March 8, 1697; 1698 a fence viewer. Charles Ferre was a freeman in 1671 and swore Allegiance last day of Dec 1678 or next day as did his son, John, at Springfield, MA. When Charles died Jul 3, 1699 in Springfield, there were seven of his ten children still living.

From Springfield Familes by Warren: FERRY. I have adopted the spelling " Ferry " because there does not seem to be any uniformity in the
family itself for spelling the name.
For instance - In deed T-264 (1752) John Ferry, Joseph Ferry & Gershom Ferry sell land granted Charles Ferry - Deed P-268 (1746) - Gershom Ferre, John Ferre & Joseph Ferre sell land - Deed P-448 - Gershom Ferry. Deed P-539, Noah Ferry of Hadley deeds to Jonathan Ferry of Springfield, subject to Dower of my Hon. Mother Abigail Hale (Family No. 3) and in all these deeds the Grantors were able to write their own names and many times when the parties wrote their names Ferre, the person who drew up the deeds would spell the name Ferry.
