        "DAVENPORT, Reverend George Montraville
Born July 23, 1888 at Valley Head. Died May 9, 1967 in Birmingham.
Father: Cicero Davenport. Mother: Helen Elizabeth Davenport. Married
Sarah Andrews McCoy September 5, 1911. Children: Annie Helen (Guthrie),
George Montravelle, Jr., James McCoy, Sarah (Cale), and Jean. The Rev.
Davenport attended DeKalb County schools, Birmingham College, and Boston
University. An outstanding high school student, with a special interest
in mailitary affairs, he received an appointment to West Point. However,
he declined the opportunity in order to become a Methodist minister. In
college he excelled both in academic and athletic attainment. His
interest in football lasted throughout his livetime. He was admitted to
the North Alabama Conference in 1911 and was appointed to Cordova. His
other appointments include that of camp pastor at Camp McClellan during
World War I. He was district superintendent three times: During the
1930s, he served in the Tuscaloosa District (where he had four children
in the University of Alabama at the same ); during the 1940's he served
the Birmingham District; during the 1950's he was DS for the Bessemer
District. He retired in 1959, after having served his church in many
capacities, including serving as a delegate to many national and
world-wide conferences. During his 48 years as an active minister, he
was known for his great work for the causes of missions and church
extension. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from
Birmingham-Southern, Athens College, and Bob Jones College."
