BIOGRAPHY: The first mention of Samuel Stebbins in the Springfield town records was in 1657, when he would have been about eleven years old, and his seat in the meeting house was assigned. He received a grant of thirty acres of land on December 8, 1664; he was then eighteen, and apparently now an adult.
Greenlee says that he was one of the signers of a petition dated February 4, 1700-01, to Lieutenant Governor Stoughton for the settlement of a new plantation, later known as Brimfield. The petition was granted, but the Indian war interfered with its immediate settlement. Greenlee does not show any further connection between Samuel Stebbins and the town of Brimfield; apparently he died (in1708) before he could effect the move. Samuel was also one of the signers of a petition for the concession of lands from Pecowsic to Enfield in 1703, but he apparently remained a legal resident of Springfield; that was where his estate was probated, and where his lands were located, except for four acres at Great Watchoage.
