Rachel's first husband, Joseph Phillips, beat her, according to the Vincinnes court records (Vincinnes is the capital of Knox county; Pike Co was established in 1817.) Her brothers John and Thomas came to her rescue and testified against their brother-in-law in court. Phillips admitted beating her. She was grated a divorce and he was also fined for fighting with the Chambers brothers. (see Knox county court records, reported by Orvil Hall, 1990 to KKnight) 6
