JAMES GREENE I
James, a planter of Prince George's County, was born about 1680 probably at the Greene plantation near the village of Bryantown, Charles Co. He was the son of Robert and Mary Boarman Greene. It appears that James and his godfather, Thomas Frederick were partners in land speculation in Prince George's Co. By 1694 they are both listed on the Rent Roll of Piscataway Hundred for 651 acres of land called Aire. In 1701 James and Frederick, both of Prince George's Co., purchased 600 acres, a part of a larger tract known as Strive (sic: Strife), for 15,000 pounds of tobacco. Strife was located in southern Prince George's Co., south of Piscataway, on the main road from Piscataway to Port Tobacco. The southern part bordered on the Mattawoman Creek and Swamp and adjoined the land Aire already in their possession. Thomas Frederick died in 1709 and bequeathed to his godsons James and Thomas Greene, each 100 acres of Strife and to their mother, Mary Green, 200 acres of Strife. To his wife Mary he bequeathed his personal estate, to pass at the death to Thomas, Jane and Elizabeth Green. It appears that James purchased the entire Strife plantation from his family members. He also purchased Cowpen and including Strife, Aire, held over 1200 acres of land.
James was married to Charity Hagan, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Hagan, who resided near Leonardtown. Charity's father, Thomas Hagan, a planter of St. Mary's Co., died in 1716. She is listed in his will as Charity Green and received 10 shillings from his estate.
James wrote his will on Feb 14, 1728 and it was probated Feb 17, 1734. He gave 200 acres, the westend of Strife to his daughter Mary Bowlin. To his son James, 300 acres of Strife, the home plantation where his mother Charity resided. He also gave James his silver tumbler and six silver spoons marked J:G: and his wearing apparel. To his son William he gave the residue of Strife. To his son Roger he gave one half of Aire and Cowpen. To his daughter Elizabeth Thompson he gave the other half of Aire. To his wife Charity the home plantation during her life and land rent and his personal estate and was named executrix of his estate.
