claims a range on Francis' birthdate of 1770-1780 in NC or TN.
Carolyn Diane Winkler on OneWorldTree - note: Richard Hale Sr should be father of Richard Hale Jr, but even
Shari & Ken Knight http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=knight3&id=I519
don't source that.
In "Some Tennessee heroes of the Revolution" a solitary reference to Hale brothers:
"Richard Hale of Giles County also deposes that he was in the Revolution. Nathan Hale says that his father moved after the Revolution to Tennessee. They lived first in Washington County, Tenn, and then Nathan Hale moved to Giles County.
"Note: --It is evident that Amon Hale, above, and Nathan Hale were brothers and that possibly Richard Hale was also a brother"
[kdd: does this account for the family lore about being connected the Revolutionary War hero, Nathan Hale?!
Also, LDS has record of Francis Hale b.1790 to Thomas Hall and Elzabeth Chenowith in Washington Co, TN, but she was their daughter and married David Shipman]

Tennessee Census of 1814 has Richard Hale, Sr and Jr in Washington County, TN - our Richard Hale is too young!
US Census of 1820 has Richard Hale 16-25 in Sumner Co, TN, also too old
US Census of 1830 has same Richard still in Sumner, another Richard Hale 50-60 in Jefferson Co, TN, and another Richard Hale (not present) in Sullivan Co, TN. By 1840 only the older Richard remains.
The early TN Census has too many Hale's to narrow down, but there was a Francis Hale in 1812 tax list of Humphreys Co, TN.
-> so this would be Richard Hale, Sr. Says earlier he was born in NC, but family moved early on to Baltimore County, MD where he, Amon, entered the service under Joshua Stephenson. IF this is ours, a large pedigree at

This Richard Hale "Sr" born 1749, m 1769, is a generation too old, but he also had a son Richard b.1775
"Frances Hale" from a letter by Vonnie Wilson, his ggd. "related to Nathan Hale, famous Rev. War hero"
A will by Richard Hale of Bedford, VA references son Frank -
"Whitley, page 9 Bedford Co, Virginia, RICHARD HAIL, Will dated 19 November 1783 Unto my beloved wife Elizabeth Hail all my personal and real estate during the time of life and... while she remains a widow and after her decrease to divide equally among children Sarah Hatcher, John Hail, Elizabeth Hail, James Hail, Martha Hail, Richard Hail, Frank Hail, Powel Hail, Molly Hail, Lewis Hail. Proved June 28, 1784
Worrell, page 37 'Richard will probated Jun 1784, names wife Elizabeth, children Sarah Hatcher, John Hail, Elizabeth Hail, James Hail, Martha Hail, Richard Hail, Frank Hail, Powel Hail, Molly Hail, Lewis Hail."

and some believe this is our Frances, but note , Frances Hale b1766-1784 living in Franklin Co, VA 1810 is probably son of Richard Hale and Elizabeth Edmondson. Coincidentally, a John Chambers lives next door.
Note that This Richard Hale of Bedford Co, VA was son of Francis Hale and Adara Meador. This Hale line also has names Nathan and Joshua in it like ours and some also moved from Washington Co, MD
Francis/Frank is still in Bedford Co, VA with brothers, etc in 1799:
1799/12/5, Hatcher, Elijah, John Hale, Peter David, James Hale, William Hatcher, Richard Hale, Francis Hale, Powell Hale, legatees of Richard Hale dc’d & Stephen Hale, senr guardian for Stephen Hale Jr & Lewis M. Hale two other legatees of the same Richard Hale dc’d to John Craighead Sen. 160 lbs, tract on Blackwater, Hale, Dudley & Meads lines. Franklin Co VA db 4, 11

Francis was in Knox County, IN by 1809 (voter rolls)[kdd: have not verified; would be in "Hoosier Genealogist," May June, 1962: pg. 80. ] Only Hale in 1812 is John Hale, Knox County militia. Daughters from tdbuswell public member tree on ancestry.com. No source given and I cannot confirm with an 1820 census nor are there any marriage records for them in Gibson/Pike Co, IN before 1840.
Presumably married in Washington Co, TN before 1807. The only recorded Hale marriage there is: |
