I've always wondered if Olie were short for Oliver. In WW1 Draft Reg he signs 1st "Ollie Melvin Myers" and 2nd "Olie Melvin Myers"! In an old letter from a family friend whose husband was named Oliver, she refers to Olie as the "other Oliver", so probably his birth name was Oliver.
