Narrative
working at Jones Stores Co 12th & Main, KC, MO June 5, 1917 (WW1 Draft Card)
message from Kyle, his grandson:
Jim's nickname was "Mac". I guess because he would correct their pronunciation of McRoberts...
I knew him the first 15 years of my life. They lived about 5 miles away and we visited on every possible occasion. I remember Lela was somewhat aloof, as if she'd had enough of kids! but Mac was extroverted and always trying to make everyone as comfortable as possible. He had the perfect salesman's personality and was always making quips and puns. He reserved his dry humor for mixed company. He was exceptionally industrious and provided well for his extended family, altho he retired before I was born. He worked for the RailRoad most of his life and visited everywhere in the country the railroad went. He was very devout and went to Central Bible Church while in KC; there he was a deacon and very involved in church activities.
Here's an example of the kind of joke he wrote down to tell his male customers:
"There was a young girl from Anheuser
Who said no man could surprise her
But Pabst took a chance
Found Schlitz in her pants
And sent her home Pale Budweiser"
Attached an example of his Vacation Diaries.
